Exquisite Weddings Magazine, behind-the-scenes

Hello!  Here we are, at the beginning of November, and it’s been quite a year.  I hope yours has been as productive and fulfilling as ours, though maybe not as crazy!  We have a lot of new projects and ideas brewing and can’t wait to share them with you.  To that end, I’d like to introduce a new guest writer - Jennette Wilson.  Though new to the wedding business, Jennette has had her work featured in several publications, and brings a true passion for both beauty and storytelling that we think will fit right in here at Adorations.  We’re so excited to welcome her to the team!

We passed through the entry of the country club, peering through doorways and down halls in search of our destination.  Following the buzz of conversation, we continued until we reached a bright, sunlit space, and I suddenly felt as if I had come into some sort of pocket world.  Encased by windows, the room glowed with morning light and energy.  There was an air of industry, but also ease; everyone seemed to know their place in this new world, and their purpose, and was glad to fulfill it.  LaVonne greeted us with a smile - friendly, cheerful, distracted by her own focus.  A well-serving focus made evident in her corner of the staging area, a corner spilling over with the wonderful organized flurry of an artist at work.

The request was for greenery growing up along a windowframe, creating a sort of half arbor.  Enchantingly, the result looked as if it had been transplanted straight from The Secret Garden.  A wilderness of ninebark and huckleberry sprouted from the floorboards as if it belonged, and from this wilderness grew rose vines and pepperberry fronds in an easy, graceful arc.  A step away, a tarp lay scattered with clipped stems and blossoms, plucked leaves, and five-gallon buckets overflowing with surplus foliage.

Standing back, hands on hips, gesturing, the designers discussed the overall effect.  A spray of the pepperberry, apparently as feisty as its name suggested, had taken an awkward detour.  LaVonne was soon up the ladder to make the correction.

“Do you see that straight line?”

“What if we add more roses?”

Ultimately, they decided against additional vines.  It is easy enough to fidget with a creative project until the end of time, but the arrangement was already well-balanced, and in no real need of adjustment.  Later, I learned the blossoms on the rose vines were both unexpected and not quite the prescribed color, but met with a little flexibility and a lot of enthusiasm, became a surprise of great advantage.

I watched, fascinated, as the setup progressed to completion.  Prop bouquets were photographed, extra flowers gathered and contained, and tools returned to their belts and boxes while the morning sun shone upon it all.  We carted the last of the supplies out to the truck and said our goodbyes.  The next step was teardown, but that would come later, after the photoshoot, and after coffee.

COASTAL OMBRE as seen in Ceremony Magazine

HELLO SPRING BLOOMS! The season of color is here and we could not be more exhilarated than to celebrate this reawakening with one of our favorite styled shoots that graced the pages of Ceremony Magazine

Shot at the stunning L’auberge Del Mar by Pam Scott Photography, this collaborative design was with my good friend and wedding coordinator Regina Young of Meant2Be Events, based in Scottsdale, Arizona.

As she describes: "Taking inspiration from the vibrant energy of the coastal background, this crisp modern design was intended to be bold, harmonious and sophisticated while keeping the canvas clean. From the contemporary lounge furniture, to the playful overhead floral display, down to the details of the striking stationery, each element was carefully curated to create a chic stylish celebration. Martini, anyone?”

It’s evident our background at the stunning L’auberge Del Mar set our scene with the ocean in the distance and a combination of ombre flowers to die for! This arrangement was one of my favorites to create, starting with our vibrant purple phalaenopsis orchids to anemones drifting into pops of pink with frilly tulips, ranunculus into everyone’s favorite peony, then drifting towards the paler shades of roses, hyacinth, sweet peas and finally, the white orchids -- with such a lush profile of fleurs, this cascading centerpiece truly takes my breath away!

To frame our tabletop design, we created a backdrop full of whimsy to highlight and complement the overall styling, comprised of oceanic teal chiffon draped asymmetrically with an artful installation of belles of Ireland, driftwood with falling orchids and yellow craspedia aka billy balls. A bar top added fun mini cakes, candles and vases with a touch of greenery to complete our setting.

Taking this inspiration into fashion, our model, Kimberly Daniels, posed in a gown from the White Flower Bridal Boutique and held a bountiful bouquet comprised of our incredible floral palette.

This contemporary coastal ombre shoot fulfilled our aesthetic game plan and truly moved us to create a colorful spring masterpiece… one that we hope inspires you!

VENDOR LOVE: GARRETT RICHARDSON PHOTOGRAPHY

Editorial Feature in Ceremony Magazine 2015

Photography by Garrett Richardson Photography
(formerly of Clove of Kin)

This week, the hot off the press copies of Ceremony Magazine 2015 arrived in our mailbox, showcasing truly amazing features for Adorations Botanical Artistry and that of our colleagues. We were thrilled to see our editorial spreads in print and look forward to sharing those in detail on our blog with a “behind-the-scenes” story of how they all came to be.

Being that I also had the pleasure to attend one of my first 2015 wedding-industry events last week, the Grand Opening Party for the “Lofty Wedding Collection,” I was inspired to begin with a young man and the passion he has for his work – a vendor who I had the opportunity to work with to create one of my published contributions in Ceremony.

Now, Garrett Richardson is quite a talented photographer. His new Photography Studio is located directly above the brand new Elle Bridal Boutique and across from Posh Paperie in this cool urban space in Downtown San Diego; making this trio, the “Lofty Wedding Collection.” Garrett, who was formerly with Clove and Kin, started this year beginning a new chapter in his life and launching this vendor collective and establishing his own namesake photography company. Garrett’s work is already very well known but he made quite an impression on me during a shoot together for Ceremony Magazine last year.

As featured in the magazine as our FARM TO TABLE spread, which couldn’t be more perfectly titled (and you will understand why soon enough), Adorations had two photographers assist in capturing our king-table concept at Green Acres; one of which was Garrett, working under the Clove and Kin company. I had never met Garrett before this shoot but he had come highly recommended, as I had noted his stunning photography work in the past. His demeanor was as sweet as can be and his execution in shooting not only the massive tabletop but the “cabbage patch” floral bouquet was flawless – ending up on a full page feature in the 2015 Ceremony.

When I saw Garrett at his Grand Opening, I was so proud of him to see all that he had accomplished in this past year. From our first meeting at the Green Acres shoot, I had instantly connected with him, which is something I do when I share that creative drive and personal philosophy with another being. Garrett’s ventures to create his own business and establish his brand were just so on point and when he shared his story on “THE TREE” in his logo, my heart simply melted.

Inspired by family, connection and relationships, Garrett recalled childhood drives up the central coast to visit his relatives in San Luis Obispo and spending those long car rides staring out the window passing by magnificent oak trees.

“These trees were just each so unique and different, in their own way,” remarks Garrett. “An Oak isn’t going anywhere. Its one of the longest and deeply rooted trees in the ground, and it becomes part of everlasting life. It’s faithful. Sturdy. Something that lasts – just like that of marriage, which grows into family. Those are the kind of portraits I love to photograph.”

Because we share these sentiments of what weddings truly represent, I fell more in love with this bright, young photographer and his reflective heart. Garrett’s engaging personality, honest soul and tremendous work ethic will follow him to great success. I am so honored to have met him on our Ceremony Magazine shoot and look forward to many more inspired projects with his brand, Garrett Richardson Photography. I just can’t help but think of him and his Giving Tree.

Maharani Weddings FEATURES Adoration’s FLOWER CROWNS

Shot by Braja Mandala Wedding Photography

There is something magical about placing a flower crown a top a lady’s head. It’s the moment when she transforms into her very own inner princess…

Adoration’s was inspired to create three very special floral crowns for a shoot with the incredibly talented photographer, Braja Mandala. Braja sent me the image of three Radhiki Gopi Skirts in different styles and asked that I create the finishing or rather crowning look with a floral headpiece.

I am often asked to create these fresh floral head wreaths for all ages, mostly darling young flower girls or for the bridal parties at rustic outdoor weddings, but these skirts were extravagant in their ethnic detailing, which inspired me to make dramatic accessories to complement.

The first crown was a luscious compilation of roses and dahlias in an ivory and green color palette while the second crown was a bountiful mix of colorful florals to offset the gorgeous patterned blue skirt design.  The third crown was very simple --- a strand of white hyacinth blossoms that were delicately sewn together with petite beads to add a touch of fresh flora to an ethnic head wrap.

This stunning fashion editorial shoot is featured TODAY on MaharaniWeddings.com. We are thrilled to have contributed to this incredible feature with Braja Mandala Wedding Photography and Gopi Skirts. Thank you so much for including Adorations and our floral crowns… again, perfect for any princess, at any age!

ART ALIVE

The San Diego Museum of Art goes FULL BLOOM.

For the past 33 years, Art Alive has been the SDMA’s signature fundraiser and annual floral exhibition bringing great works of art to life with floral interpretations. For the first time ever, I decided to participate in this phenomenal event with many of our industry colleagues and collaborated with my good friend and wedding coordinator, Thomas Bui Lifestyle.

There were over 100 pieces of art available to choose from to inspire the floral interpretations. Thomas headed up our art selection and choose Canaletto’s “The Molo from the Bacino di San Marco, Venice, 1747-50.” We studied the painting together to conceptualize how I would recreate and transform a floral arrangement into a sculptural masterpiece. I was struck by how linear the composition was, but I knew I needed to see movement; that would be my challenge. Thomas commented on the wood boats and shape of the gondolas in the painting, which lead us to our design direction and foundation for the piece. We choose a wood grain box with gold trim and the palm boat vessel, which seemed perfectly in sync with this great work of art. I began crafting the florals, building the ocean with a nest of dusty miller and adding just a few pink peonies to represent the pantaloons of the gondolier. The tower was of course the focal point, so I designed a replication made of quicksand roses in ivory, pink and peach, with a peak of lamb’s ear to mimic the very top.

And I must say, for an Art Alive first-timer, I was very pleased with myself…so much so that after arranging and perfecting our creation, it ironically toppled over ruining the fresh flowers I so meticulously placed!

As you can imagine, I was crushed…at first.

But like every great artist before me, you must pick up the pieces (literally, in my case) and begin again. Second-time around, it was even better than before.

On Friday April 11th, we unveiled our floral masterpiece to the public, and celebrated Art Alive at the Museum’s BLOOM BASH that very evening. The exhibition ran just through the weekend keeping all the fresh botanicals as pristine as their hundreds-of-year-old artful counterparts.

While we didn’t take home a grand prize, we certainly received many accolades from our industry friends and press mentions. The famous bloggers behind The Horticult named us one of their FAVORITE top 25 pieces, which is truly such an honor. You can be sure that Adorations Botanical Artistry will be back at Art Alive next year. Because as you all should know… It's not what you look at that matters, it's what you see.” - Henry David Thoreau

TAP Party: Mixing Business with Pleasure

Tim Altbaum is known for his parties.

Sure his business Tim Altbaum Productions (otherwise known as TAP) is the best in San Diego, creating masterful sound, lighting, and entertainment for weddings and special events. But his annual industry party, reserved for the finest vendors in Southern California, receives accolades every year for being a showstopper, much like him.

TAP Party.jpg

This year, I partnered with Tim as his floral design sponsor to decorate a new amazing space. As if Brian Malarkey wasn’t already a household name, his latest San Diego creation, Green Acre Eatery located in the heart of UTC at Campus Pointe, is exactly as it sounds; an organic restaurant and event space that celebrates farm to table cuisine.

Nestled amongst the UCSD industrial park, labs, and research offices, Green Acre’s outdoor gardens are perfectly at peace with its surrounding and offers a sanctuary and retreat for those working in the vicinity. Open for breakfast and lunch until 3pm and then for a Happy Hour from 4-7pm, Green Acre’s modern rustic design perfectly transforms from day to night into a swanky special event venue.

Like any designer, I couldn’t wait to see my work come alive in this new space and working with Tim just took it to the next level. Green Acre segued into a high-end nightclub for the TAP Party and industry veterans were blown away by another phenomenal event hosted by Tim Altbaum Productions.

Our florals were an organic mix of anemones, garden roses, dahlias, sweet peas, protea and fresh greens, arranged in rustic containers and handmade wooden vessels to stay true to the farm-to-table concept.

As if I couldn’t get enough of Green Acre, I turned around and set-up a tabletop photoshoot for the very next day. I just couldn’t resist the inspiring location and know it will be such a haute spot, I just had to be one of the firsts to make it so.
